Young Dartford Woman Overall Winner in International Photography Competition

A young Dartford woman, who spent three months volunteering on an international development project in Nicaragua, is the overall winner in an international photography competition. Amy Smith’s photo was chosen from over 300 entries globally, in a competition to capture the impact and experiences of volunteers around the world on the UK government funded International Citizen Service (ICS) programme. Her entry won Best Overall Image. It depicts a portrait of a Nicaraguan woman, Maria Fulgencio at her home in San José de Paiwas, Nicaragua. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 17 years ago, a total shock, and as a young mother, it was pretty tough going.  I had my operation followed by 6 months of chemotherapy, which was very harrowing, and then a 4 week course of radiotherapy.  But with a very positive attitude, and the loving support of my husband and family, I got through it.  Also having the children to concentrate on, gave me the determination to beat it.  And I did, so here I am 16 years clear now, and living my life, happy and content, and wanting to help...

Gromit Unleashed® Character Trail is a big hit at Bluewater this Summer

Local children kick-off the hunt to find twelve 5ft sculptures from Wallace & Gromit’s public arts trail at Bluewater. Twelve giant, colourful Gromit sculptures have been unleashed around Bluewater this Summer and guests can follow the trail to find them all. The sculptures, originally part of the international Gromit Unleashed arts trail in Hong Kong, are raising money for Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal. This campaign asks businesses to spend as little as one hour to make adjustments for people on the autistic spectrum.
