Last month saw Dartford take on Carshalton Athletic at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Chris Palmer spoke with goalkeeper Jonny Henly, who featured in the matchday programme for that fixture. For those who missed it, here is the article:
After having spent seven of the last eight years serving Tonbridge Angels, followed by a solitary season with Folkestone Invicta last term, Jonny Henly has signed on as number one between the Dartford sticks.
And the 31-year-old goalkeeper is delighted to finally be at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park:
“I’m very well, and my goal is to enjoy playing and to try to be successful with promotion for the team I’m playing for. Having played against Dartford many times over the years, I’ve always enjoyed coming here. There’s an excellent setup and, alongside the manager’s ambitions for the club, joining Dartford was a no brainer for me.”
At 31, Jonny brings a wealth of experience to the Dartford squad and, having been promoted from the Isthmian Premier League before, he’s well-equipped to contribute towards the side this season and, hopefully, beyond.
“I’m always looking to win every game, then the rest should take care of itself. I feel that I’m a well-rounded player with strengths in all areas. Obviously, goalkeeper is my strongest position, but every ‘keeper thinks they would make a great centre-forward!!”
Despite the spluttering start to the season, Jonny remains optimistic and his, and the team’s, ambitions remain unchanged.
“Promotion is on everyone’s agenda. I think that, collectively, we had a great pre-season and, if we can do what we’re capable of with this talented group of players, then we are capable of winning every game we go into. But, keeping a level head is important to succeed. We mustn’t get too up or too down on ourselves.”
Jonny’s words display segments of experience and wisdom, and he lives by the advice that he was once given:
“You have to take one game at a time. Don’t dwell on the past, whether it’s good or bad, the next game is the most important!”
And it’s those next games that help him to remain motivated throughout these long seasons in the non-league game because, like his peers, Jonny has to balance his life as a footballer alongside his life outside of the sport in his rather physical job of carpentry and building work.
“Balancing a physical job with football can sometimes be a challenge. However, it’s like anything, you get used to it and know how to cope with the demands. I’ve been doing it for eight years now, so it’s no problem! I do run between training sessions though, in order to keep myself fit.
“I love the team element of playing football. Winning games with a group of friends is what it’s about. There’s no better feeling, and this Dartford squad is one of the best I’ve ever been a part of, they’re all top guys! Plus, the prospect of promotion and having success at a club always keeps me motivated.”
And for any future footballer and/or goalkeeper, Jonny has two words of advice for you, two words that he lives by:
“Hard work!”

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
No, I don’t believe in them!
Favourite footballer?
Favourite goalkeeper is Gigi Buffon. A class act that did it until he was 40-odd years of age.
Favourite football team?
Arsenal. Only one team in London!
Favourite football moment?
Promotion with Tonbridge to the National League South. We were not the best team by any stretch, but our team spirit got us over the line. Also, my U21 debut for Scotland was a nice moment for me and my Scottish mother!
Biggest role model?
Peter Schmeichel.
Team to watch out for in the league this season?
I think this league is very competitive and anyone can beat anyone on their day. I don’t think there’s one in particular I’m watching out for.
Who are your biggest supporters?
My fiancé and son, and my family. They’re always there supporting me at most games in all weather!
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I was a striker until I was 11, where I played half a match in goal and got scouted by Reading as a goalie! The rest is history!
What sport would you do if you didn’t play football?
Golf. This is my hobbie and, if it wasn’t football, then there’s not much better than travelling the world and playing golf in the sun 🌞
Who will win the Premier League this season?
Silly question! Arsenal of course. Arsenal I hope!!
