SECTION ONE

Dean Nayler is another promising player to emerge from the successful Dartford Academy.

With his versatility at being able to play at right-back, right-wing-back, and centre-back, the right-footed youngster impressed Ady and his coaches during pre-season. His performances proved that he can make it at league level, and he has made ten appearances this season until an injury thwarted his progress.

“Yeah, the injury was a small chipped bone in my ankle. But hopefully, I’ll be looking to return to training in the next few weeks.”

Despite being out of action at the moment, Dean remains in good spirits, “I’m good thanks Chris. It has been a really good feeling to be playing for the club, as well as being here for nine years. To wear the shirt is a good feeling.”

This young player has been a part of the successful Dartford Academy setting since a very young age. However, he does have some experience of first team football to latch onto, having spent last season playing for the Corinthian’s men’s team as well as his Dartford Academy commitments.

But it’s his link to the Academy that holds a special place in Dean’s heart…

“I’ve been playing at Dartford for the last 8-9 years Chris, progressing through the Pre-Academy into the Academy. This club means a lot to me, as being in the Academy for the last two years has enabled me to develop my abilities on the pitch, as well as growing a better understanding of the game. It has helped me to progress into the First Team.”

He continues, “I first started in grassroots football, before moving into Dartford’s Pre-Academy. I’m very happy with how my football career has gone so far. It’s been enjoyable and I’m at a place where I want to be. However, I’m always looking to strive further and to become a professional player has always been the dream goal, which I’m still working towards.”

It’s no secret that the Non-League game can be a huge stepping stone for young talent to grow, both as footballers and men. Afterall, there are plenty of opportunities for young starlets to play alongside the more experienced players, which will help them grow in strength and maturity. Was this the reason why Dean signed for Dartford?

“I signed for the club because, this has been a long-term goal for me. To come through the Pre-Academy and Academy, and into the First Team has been the intention from the start.”

“I’m delighted to be here.” He continues, “I initially found out before the pre-season game against Sutton United (that Ady wanted to promote him). I spoke to Ady, and he told me what he expects of me. I’m extremely happy to be given this opportunity to play for the club at First Team level. It has been my goal since joining the Academy, and I intend to grasp it with both hands and continue working hard throughout the season. My ambitions are not only to improve on myself by returning to action and getting more First Team game-time, but to also help the club get promoted.”

Of course, in order for Dean to achieve his ambitions, a lot of hard work is needed. But how does he balance his working life with his health, fitness, and general wellbeing?

“I like to keep to a good diet, especially eating a good meal before the game. That can be anything from chicken and pasta, or rice, or even pancakes. Balancing my work and football is very easy, as I tend to work on early morning shifts, which allows me to attend training and also keep my fitness at good levels.”

He continues, “Outside of football, I like going to the gym. I also like a cheeky Nando’s and also chilling out while playing the PlayStation.”

Once he returns from his injury, Dean can begin focusing on his plans for the future, which will see him working hard in order to get back into the team and gaining more appearances for the Darts.

In the meantime though, he has these few words for the Dartford faithful…

“Thank you all for your continued support, both at home games and travelling to the away games with us.”
