Last month saw Dartford take on Burgess Hill Town at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Chris Palmer spoke to defender Ben Frempah, who featured in the matchday programme for that fixture. For those who missed it, here is the article:
Ben Frempah is another one of Ady Pennock’s new signings for this season. The thirty-year-old central defender brings a wealth of experience to the Dartford backline, as the team looks to go a step further than the previous campaign.
Originally being born in Sassuolo to Ghanaian parents, the Italian defender grew up supporting European giants AC Milan. Having settled in England when he was young, Ben’s love of football was aided by his support of Arsenal and he soon began his playing career on these shores.
His journey in the beautiful game began with a spell at Cray Wanderers, before he moved on to represent the likes of Leicester City, Ross County, Hendon, Solihull Moors, Guiseley, Wycombe Wanderers, Wingate & Finchley, Ebbsfleet United, Hayes & Yeading, Enfield Town, Cheshunt, Leatherhead, before a second spell with Wingate & Finchley last season.
Now, of course, he plies his trade at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. And, despite seeing red on his debut in the opening day defeat at Dulwich Hamlet, the big defender has already made six starting appearances for his new club.
He remains in a positive and confident mood at the time of our discussion, despite the Darts’ sluggish start to the season.
“I’m feeling positive about the season ahead. We have a talented group of players here, who are also good people off the pitch. That’s very important, and I feel that together we can definitely have a great season. It’s my ambition to be a part of winning teams and to win trophies.”
He continues, “I signed for Dartford because, I believe in what the club is doing. The club has great ambition, and I want to be a part of that.”
Of course, no team is successful without a solid defence. And being a central defender is where Ben feels more comfortable, natural, and able to affect the game the most.
“I love the competition and teamwork that football offers. Plus, for those ninety or so minutes, you’re in a different world. As a defender, my first thought is to defend, protect my goalkeeper, and keep clean sheets. Consistency is key to my game and, whenever possible, I like to chip in with goals at the other end as well.”
What can supporters expect to see when watching Ben play?
“I believe in my aerial and defensive abilities, positioning, and tackling. My reading of the game and my ability to stay composed when under pressure help me to communicate and help to keep the defence organised. All these things are the strengths that Dartford fans can expect from me.”
He continues, “I go to the gym regularly in order to keep myself sharp and strong. I also remain motivated by remembering my goals and by taking each game as they come. We must remember that every game is different, generally speaking, so that challenge keeps me motivated as well. However, resilience is also key. Regardless of what happens, you have to keep on going.”
In order to be at his best on matchdays, Ben tries to visualise the game in his mind beforehand, while trying to keep as relaxed as possible. Listening to music helps to get him into the zone he requires, and he pretty much eats the same meal before each fixture while remembering the good advice once given to him…
“Never get too high, never get too low.”
That advice continues to serve him well, and it’ll please him if the younger generation of footballers also take the words on board, together with some wisdom of his own…
“Consistency is everything. Focus on the small details that many may neglect. Treat every game as if it’s your last because, time really does fly by.”
Such true words spoken by Dartford’s new number eighteen.

Nothing crazy, but I have a playlist I usually listen to in the car on my way to the game.

My Dad, he has supported me through my whole career.
Team to watch out for in the league this season?
I think every team are good on their day generally speaking. But if we do what we know we can do, there shouldn’t be anyone to worry about.
Who are your biggest supporters?
My family and close friends.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I also produce music, it’s something I also do enjoy doing.
What sport would you do if you didn’t play football?
Probably basketball. I played it a lot growing up… probably why I’m half decent in the air!
Who will win the Premier League this season?
I want to say Arsenal, but Liverpool do look strong.
