DARTFORD FC | CLASS OF 2025-26 | MEET GEORGE WHITEFIELD

by | Apr 10, 2026 | Walking with the Darts

Last month, Dartford took on Ramsgate. Chris Palmer spoke to George Whitefield, who featured in the matchday programme for that fixture. For those who missed it, here is the article:

Back in the 2023-24, George Whitefield made seven appearances (four starts) for the Dartford First Team. The young Dartford Academy defender impressed Ady Pennock enough to warrant a First Team place last season.

His promotion saw him come of age in the Darts’ backline, as he registered 42 appearances (36 starts), and contributed at the other end of the pitch by scoring an incredible (for a defender) ten goals.

Whilst the goals haven’t quite fallen for George so far this season (he has only the one goal to his name), the defender has been excellent in defence and has made 24 starting appearances so far.

Does he like it here at Princes Park?

“Definitely. I’ve been here for quite some time now, so there wasn’t really any question of me not re-signing, especially when you consider last season’s exploits.”

This season’s struggles aren’t a secret to anybody involved with the club, and George isn’t oblivious either. Yet he and his teammates remain confident that promotion can definitely be achieved…

“We’re still in a good position and, although there’s a lot of tough opposition this season, I think we have a very good chance of promotion this term.”

For the younger players and Dartford Academy graduates within the current squad, promotion is crucial for their career progression. Like many of his peers, George is aiming high…

“My ambition is to climb the football ladder and, hopefully, become a professional player one day.”

He certainly possesses the qualities to achieve those ambitions, providing he’s given a fair opportunity to do so. But what exactly does he think sets him apart from other players who play in his position?

“I’m very hardworking and I’m more than happy to do the dirty side of the game. My biggest contribution is probably just my overall defensive game. I do like to play as a right wingback though, as I like to get involved in both the attack and the defensive side of things. One of my biggest strengths is my heading ability, however, I do need to work more on using my left foot.”

That last statement is interesting because, George has proved during the last two seasons that he’s an important and versatile member of the team. When injuries have kept teammates out, George has been deployed as a right wingback, left wingback, and a central defender. And the youngster has adapted with ease, whilst being coached from the sidelines by Ady and his coaching staff.

However unlike most defenders, George loves scoring goals at the other end as well as protecting the Dartford goalkeeper and goal…

“The feeling of winning games and scoring a goal cannot be matched! But, I do try to just remain focused and keep my eye on the end goal.”

That end goal is obviously promotion (short-term) and turning professional (long-term) for George. And he has a wise head on his young shoulders, plus he’s also aware of any future challenges that may appear on the horizon.

“If there’s anything I’ve learnt from the sport, it’s to always learn from your mistakes. I like to make sure that I’m in a chilled environment on matchdays so that I don’t get stressed because, that’s an unwanted negative distraction.”

He continues, “I’ve been extremely lucky in that I haven’t suffered many injuries so far, so I haven’t really faced too many challenges during my career. I do attend the gym 4-5 times each week to keep myself fit, and I try to live by the advice that was once offered to me… in that I try to make sure I’m working harder than everyone else.”

Is that the kind of advice that George would offer to the younger generation of footballer?

“Yes. Work harder than everyone around you.”

Such wise words from a player who prefers to do his talking on the pitch, and knows what it takes to become a regular starter in a First Team environment. Here’s hoping that he can help the Darts win promotion and launch him up the football ladder.
