Opening The Leigh UTC for years 10 and 12

by | Jun 10, 2020 | Children, Dartford News, Dartford Schools, Education

On behalf of Stephen Leahey, Principal, The Leigh UTC.

The Leigh UTC is pleased to be welcoming back years 10 and 12 students from Monday 15th June.

The UTC has been open for the last three months supporting vulnerable students and the children of key workers and is now looking forward to welcoming back more students and providing crucial face to face teaching once again. We recognise the importance of reintroducing year 10 and year 12 students to the school before the summer break, as this will be such an important time for them as they prepare for next year’s GCSE’s and A levels.

The UTC team has spent a considerable time preparing and planning for the students to return and we have put many provisions in place to ensure that our school community is safe. To ensure social distancing, we have created student and staff bubbles, implemented limited class sizes, designated social areas, and introduced a clear one-way system around the Academy.

We know that communication with parents and students during this time is crucial and we have written to parents and produced informational videos to reassure everyone returning that their safety is paramount.

Online home learning and pastoral support will continue for students who will not be returning this term and these students will continue to receive high quality learning resources and live streamed lessons from the Academy.

The UTC is unique in terms of its delivery of apprenticeship programmes in engineering and computing and we propose a safe return for these trainees from Wednesday 17th June.

The Leigh UTC offers outstanding STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) learning for students throughout years 7 to 13, specialising in Engineering and Computer Science.

Located in Dartford, Kent, The Leigh UTC aims to develop curious, academically skilled young people who aspire to be principled, compassionate learners. It is the first UTC in the UK to accept students aged 11.

From September 2020 German, Health and Fitness, Business Studies, History, Triple Science and Electronics will be added to the options.
