New Council housing bungalows in Dartford make ‘big difference’ for residents with additional needs

Residents across the borough are benefitting from the Council’s investment in social housing, as three new Dartford Council homes were unveiled last week.

Following a successful planning application, submitted in 2019, three bungalows are nearing completion in Mead Crescent, on Tree Estate.

The wheelchair accessible properties have been built on the site of a disused depot, and offer a permanent home for Council tenants with additional needs.

The features inside include adjustable worktops and sinks, lowered wardrobes and drawers, a wet room and a private garden.

Connor Palmer, 27, is set to move into one of the bungalows in the coming weeks.

He said: “To say I love this house is an understatement. I’ve never had anything like this.

“Where I’m living now is good, it’s offered some independence, but I’ll get a lot more independence living here. Now I can sit down to cook food if I want to, simple things like lower desks and pull-down drawers will make a big difference.”

The bungalows are among 32 new Council homes currently being built by contractors TSG Building Services around the Borough – with the remainder being built in Swanscombe at Keary Road, Milton Road and Gilbert Close. The properties will be delivered under the auspices of the Councils commitment to build Dartford homes for Dartford people.

Council Leader Jeremy Kite visited an Open House event in Mead Crescent on Thursday, along with Mayor of Dartford Cllr Rosanna Currans, Cllr David Mote and representatives from TSG Building Services.

Cllr Kite said: “I’m immensely proud that we’re the sort of Council that is still building for people who have particular needs.

“These homes can be used as a base to create lives. I know they’re going to make a big contribution, not only to their own lives but to their families and the community.”

Construction work on six homes in Keary Road and seven in Milton Road is expected to complete in the autumn, while work on 16 homes in Gilbert Close is due to complete in 2023.
