Paralympian JohnBoy Smith to Scale the O2 in Wheelchair for We Are Beams

Commonwealth Games Medallist, Team GB Paralympian and Patron of We Are Beams JohnBoy Smith is taking his support to new heights by undertaking a breath taking wheelchair climb over the iconic O2 Arena in London.

This special fundraising event, which will take place on Thursday 25th June, is part of a series of celebrations marking 30 years of We Are Beams supporting disabled children and their families.

Suspended high above the famous tented roof of The O2, JohnBoy will climb 365 metres in his wheelchair, reaching heights of 52 metres above the ground with spectacular 360-degree views across London, including Greenwich, the Olympic Park, and Canary Wharf.

The challenge is particularly demanding in a wheelchair, but JohnBoy Smith has been a dedicated supporter and Patron of We Are Beams for many years. His positivity and determination make him an inspiring role model for the disabled children and young people supported by the charity.

JohnBoy Smith was just 16 years old when he was shot in the spine in a case of mistaken identity, resulting in paralysis. Since then, he has shown extraordinary resilience and courage, going on to become a successful wheelchair racer. He has won Gold and Silver medals at the Commonwealth Games and proudly represented Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Sharing his thoughts on the challenge, JohnBoy said,

“I’m incredibly honoured to be taking on this challenge for We Are Beams, a charity that I am proud to support. Climbing The O2 in my wheelchair will definitely test me both physically and mentally, but I want to show that disability should never limit ambition or possibility.”

Over the past three decades, Beams has helped thousands of families navigate the complex challenges of caring for disabled children.  The vital care services include Family Advice, Short Breaks, Dragon’s Retreat Respite, Supporting Independence, and Payroll Services all providing practical help, emotional support, and meaningful opportunities for disabled children and their families.

All proceeds from this challenge will go towards providing essential care to the most vulnerable members of the community for the next 30 years and beyond.
