DARTFORD FC | IN CONVERSATION WITH LUKE COULSON

by | Dec 5, 2023 | Walking with the Darts

Last month saw Dartford host Torquay United at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Captain, Luke Coulson, featured in our matchday programme that day. For those who missed that feature, here is the full article:

SECTION ONE

Luke Coulson is one of the most joyful characters at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Whenever you see him, he’s always got a smile on his face, is approachable and good for a quick chat and laugh.

At 29 years of age, he’s one of the senior players at the club and has been deservedly rewarded with the Captain’s armband this term.

After an impressive campaign last season, where Luke scored seven goals and registered numerous assists in 43 appearances (in all competitions), the midfielder/winger is an integral part of Alan Dowson’s team. And, after last season, he was always going to remain a Dart…

“Re-signing with Dartford was an easy decision Chris, especially after the disappointing end to last season. I feel like we have unfinished business here.”

The timing of our discussion sees Luke returning to work after half-term (he’s the Academy Coach at National League outfit Bromley), but he’s still in high spirits after returning from a short holiday…

“I’m very well thank you Chris, although the rain, flooding, and storm hasn’t helped much! Half-term is over, so coaching has begun again, which takes up most of my time. However, I was able to go to Budapest for a few days with my wife, which was an amazing few days away.”

Working within the beautiful game makes it easy for Luke to balance his fitness levels and, despite a love for coffee, still puts some of his teammates to shame…

“I don’t really balance my diet…! I just eat a lot and drink a lot of coffee! But, I still manage to get down to the golf course on my days off… and I have a better handicap than Luke Allen! Oh, and Lewis Manor! Oh, and Mitchell Beeney… HaHaHaHa…!”

He continues, “I’m on my feet most of the day, so fitness isn’t an issue! However, I do throw in a few gym sessions around my work schedule as well.”

In his 21 appearances (at the time of writing) so far this season, Luke has scored five goals and has already notched up numerous assists. He’s just two goals away from his total of last term, which shows how the creative side of the team is improving. However, the Skipper is all too aware of the inconsistent results so far this season and everyone’s frustrations. And Luke has this to say to the Dartford supporters:

“Just stick with us. I understand the criticism and frustration at times, due to the inconsistent results. But, be with us throughout it all, and judge us at the end of the season.”

SECTION TWO

Faith or Superstition?

Absolutely none. I’m an atheist and don’t believe in superstitions!

Best Memory?

Winning at Wembley.

Biggest Influence In Your Career?

My Mum & Dad, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Harvey Bradbury.

Best Goal Scored/Save Made?

Hartlepool away for Bromley. Outside of the foot, over the defender, and volley. Although, my goal for Dartford against Braintree last season is up there too! I think Baris Altintop was supposed to be marking me…!

Most Under-Rated Player You’ve Played With?

Nathan Ashmore – Phenomenal goalkeeper and helped us make the playoffs when I was at Ebbsfleet United.

Most Under-Rated Player You’ve Played Against?

James Norwood – Always used to score against us whoever I played for.

Biggest Influence In The Dressing Room?

We have several big voices in the changing room that each add to a close knit group. However, I’d say Luke Allen and Charlie Sheringham have always helped and contributed to that.

If you were to be involved with a five-a-side tournament, and had to select the best players you have played against, which five players would you choose?

In goal would be Nathan Ashmore (at Boreham Wood), then Ethan Pinnock in defence (at Brentford). The midfield would be Ruben Lofus-Cheek (at AC Milan) and Romaine Sawyers (at Cardiff City), then James Norwood (at Oldham Athletic) up front.
