SECTION ONE

It’s always a pleasure to speak with Olly Box. The talented youngster offers a friendly face, and is quick to come over and say hello no matter what the circumstances.

The 19-year-old winger announced himself with a bang last season, where he scored on his debut in a 2-1 victory at Dover Athletic back in February. He went on to make nineteen appearances in all competitions (12 starts), scoring six goals, four of which came in the National League South competition.

His 2024-25 campaign has started rather slowly though, with just two goals in nine appearances so far. Having made seven starting appearance, those two goals came in the FA Cup game against Marlow at the end of August, which saw the Darts triumph 6-2.

However since then, the youngster has been struggling with a slight injury which has hindered his progress. But, he did return to come off the bench and feature in Dartford’s recent 0-0 stalemate against Hendon.

Despite the recent setback, Olly is still his usual polite and bubbly self at the time of our discussion…

“I’m good thanks Chris, just enjoying life and enjoying my football. I’ve been itching to get back though…”

There was a lot of speculation surrounding this talented young footballer last season, something of which never seems to disappear. But, Olly remains grounded and is still a Dartford player. I asked him why he made the decision to stay at the club.

“This club and the fans made me feel so welcome last year, and I felt it was a no-brainer to stay for another season. It’s an honour to play for Dartford during the last three years, and to play on such a consistent basis feels so good.”

What does he hope to achieve this season?

“I know that everyone’s thoughts are the same at the moment, but I really do feel that the main aim for us is promotion. On a more personal note, I just want to score as many goals as possible, as well as get assists for my teammates along the way. I want us to have a successful season mate.”

In order to be successful, you must obviously work hard. And, fitness is one of the things that Dartford boss Ady Pennock has been extremely hot on since his arrival. How does a young lad like Olly keep on top of his fitness and wellbeing, especially considering he only works part-time at the moment?

“It’s easy to be honest Chris. I find myself being able to focus on my fitness and general wellbeing easily, as I’m not really doing much else during the days. I have time to go to the gym regularly, and I eat proper food while also enjoying life.”

He continues, “I work part-time, so have a lot of time to look after myself and build my fitness levels up during that spare time. Away from football, I’m able go just work and chill… I’ve got a very chill life at the moment. Playing football is a dream job mate. Being able to earn money from doing a job you enjoy is great!”

Olly’s career trajectory so far has seen him come through the Dartford Academy and into First Team football. He’s grown up around the Non-League game, something that he genuinely believes has helped his progress.

“Yeah, I’ve had this conversation with many people Chris… and I’m glad that I’ve ended up in the situation I’m currently in. I’ve played a lot of men’s football at a good level. I feel that I’m in a better position than lads within Academies, or even those who have dropped down the levels. I’d much rather it be this way than any other way.”

And what are his plans for the future?

“The main goal for me is to earn the title of Professional Footballer within the next couple of years, either with Dartford or another club. That’s my ambition.”

That’s Olly in a nutshell. Grounded, yet ambitious. Friendly, yet focused. And no matter what is going on with him, he always finds the time to say hello to the Dartford supporters and stop to have his picture taken with them. Does he have any final words for them?

“Of course Chris. Thank you all for your continued support. Keep coming down in numbers, as your support means a lot. Together with your help, we will go straight back up!”
