Last weekend saw Dartford host Billericay Town at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Michael Olarewaju featured in our matchday programme that afternoon. For those who missed it, here is the full article:
SECTION ONE
Michael Olarewaju signed for Dartford back in October. His arrival coincided with the heavy defeat away at Billericay Town on a cool autumn evening.
However, Ady Pennock’s side has lost just once in the Isthmian Premier League since then! An incredible run of form which sees the club sitting comfortably in the top five (and playoff) places, just three points away from Billericay Town who sit at the summit, and with a game in hand over the Essex side.
Michael’s initial arrival has been hindered by injury setbacks, but he has been back in the side recently to contribute towards the excellent run of results. At the time of writing, the big defender has made eleven appearances in all competitions, seven of which have come in the starting eleven.
His last appearance came in the hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Wingate & Finchley last weekend, whereby Michael came off the bench to replace the injured George Whitefield.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Michael via WhatsApp recently, as well as meet him and his lovely young family after the recent 4-1 win over Whitehawk at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Naturally, he was in high spirits despite having to be withdrawn from that fixture at the half-time break…
“I’m well thanks Chris. I’ve been busy trying to get the balance right with juggling two children under the age of two, as well as everything else at present. But I’m feeling good.”
The Whitehawk game was one of mixed emotions for Michael. Afterall the Darts were playing well, but an early booking for the defender meant that the visitors did their utmost to get him sent off!
“Yeah, I wasn’t playing my best game to be honest Chris. The ref told me at the break that one more mistake will see me get a red card, so I spoke to the gaffer and we agreed to pull me off for the second-half. The boys did good to win it 4-1, so I’m happy with that.”
His honesty is good to hear. We all know that some will resort to blaming others during such circumstances, but Michael is an honest and humble man despite his towering presence (over most people). His game is to help defend his goalkeeper and goal, no matter the cost. And, he’s enjoying his time here in Kent…
“It feels amazing to be here Chris! To be part of this project feels good. We have a great group of players here, and we’re all bought in to what Ady is trying to accomplish.”
Having left Eastbourne Borough at the end of last season, why did Michael decide to drop down a level to sign for the Darts?
“I signed for the club because, the potential was evident and the people are amazing. I really like Ady’s approach to things, and you can see a professional and classy approach filtering through everything happening at the club. The ambition is obviously promotion, playing consistently well, and literally erecting a brick wall across the backline.”
It goes without saying that consistency on the pitch requires focus and motivation off it as well. And Michael is no stranger to hard work and discipline.
“My approach to football is full-time. I’m in the gym four times a week, and I stay sharp and fit with three training sessions a week outside of the club. I’m incredibly mindful of what I eat on the days leading up to fixtures. I champion Whoop, as it’s my extra 1% in helping me manage the load and manage to sleep better.”
He continues, “I’ve been fortunate enough to build my working life around my fitness and health. I live by my schedule but, with younger children, it can go a bit pear-shaped sometimes!”
Not only does Michael have to balance two young children with his football, but also work outside of the game is added to that.
“Yes, alongside football I do one-on-one GCSE Tutoring. I also run a property management business with my wife, and some football coaching here and there too.”
Wow, he certainly does have a busy life indeed! Yet, he also has the experience to draw from despite only being 29 years of age.
“I was in and out of professional Academies growing up Chris. More than anything, it made me hungry for success and helped to press on me the importance of professionalism.
“I don’t believe that Academy football is the only way to make it. There are several benefits and It certainly helps being in the system, but it can also be a bit of a bubble.”
Yes, there’s definitely no substitute for a young player growing by playing First Team football on a regular basis. You only need to look at how the young Dartford starlets are progressing under the guidance of Ady Pennock, his coaching staff, and the more senior players within the squad.
A recent conversation with Duane Ofori-Acheampong saw the striker mention how important the more senior players are. And he mentioned how influential Michael is. Not just with football matters, but also ambition, consistency, and his faith.
“Well, I certainly still have every ambition of pushing on in my career Chris. I’m very grateful to still have a playing career. Injuries have been a huge blow and, at times, desperation for success has been a huge stumbling block too. I’m a lover of Jesus Christ. And, with Him I’ve got through some tough times. The only thing I’d change is, to have had earlier access to sports professionals with a lot of skill and knowledge to impart upon me.”
He continues, “But, together we can finish the season very well, gather recognition, and see what tomorrow holds.”
Wise words from a man who is determined to help Dartford succeed on all fronts. And as his little ones are calling for his attention, I’ll leave Michael to say a few words to the Dartford faithful…
“Thank you! You fans are our twelfth man. I Don’t think it’s a small thing you do by giving up your afternoons or evenings to cheer us on as we play… especially when we travel to away games. I hope that we can give the fans a lot to celebrate, as we continue to push on through the rest of the season.”
