Last Saturday saw Dartford take on Welling United at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Chris Palmer spoke to defender Joe Tennent, who featured in the matchday programme for that fixture. For those who missed it, here is the article:
Joe Tennent arrived at the beginning of September, after being signed from National League South outfit Dover Athletic.
Having also represented Whitehawk during his playing career, the 27-year-old central defender has settled nicely into Ady Pennock’s defensive unit and has made eight starting appearances for Dartford.
And fresh from scoring his first goal for the club in the recent 4-1 win over Potters Bar Town, Joe is happy with his progress so far…
“I’m happy to be here, and I’m pleased with how things are going so far!
“Dartford’s a massive club, and I signed for the club knowing that and knowing that it has a great fan base. The manager and his staff are excellent, and the team has so much talent.”
Like his teammates, Joe has every right to be pleased. Last time out saw Dartford beat Cray Wanderers 2-0 at Flamingo Park. Not only was the result a first victory on the road this season, it also stretched the Darts’ unbeaten league run to ten games. And eight of those have included Joe in the heart of the defence.
What is it exactly that he brings to the team?
“I love to defend and I’ll put my body on the line for the team. I’d like to add a few more goals to my tally this season though! I’m vocal when out on the pitch, and I always try to help others by being a calming influence. I enjoy winning and will always give 100% and fight for the badge, even when things are going against us.”
He continues, “I love playing in the centre of the defence, it’s my favourite position. I really look forward to match days! I try to prepare the best way possible by eating right and prioritising sleep.”
As has been mentioned, the Darts have been on an excellent run of form recently. It’s a statistic that coincides with Joe’s arrival. What does he think of the club’s chances for a successful season this term?
“The group is really strong. The management team know their stuff and, if we stick together, we have a really good chance of having success and achieving our goal of being promoted.”
Is that his personal target as well?
“Yes! I want to play in as many games as possible, pick up the points, and hopefully collect many clean sheets along the way to us achieving promotion.”
What about his football career as a whole?
“I would like to play at the highest level possible, enjoy my football, and achieve lots of success.”
Of course, we all know that our beautiful game also has its challenges as well as its successes. And Joe is no different because, four years ago he suffered a hugely significant injury that could have ended his playing career…
“I suffered a broken leg four years ago, which kept me out of action for nearly a year. It was a long road to recovery and a tough battle, both mentally and physically to be able to come back stronger.”
And stronger he has certainly returned. And at just 27, he still has plenty of playing time left in him. In order to stay as sharp as possible, he also attends the gym to do private workouts regularly alongside the usual team training. But, why does he do it?
“Football is my life. If I’m not playing it, I’m out coaching it. And if I’m not coaching, I’m usually watching a game.
“Of course, mid-week games can be difficult to manage. There sometimes seems to be a mad rush getting from A to B, as well as the getting home late and up early the following day factor. But I just love the sport, and I’ve never struggled to stay motivated throughout the seasons because of that love for the game.”
He continues, “I always remember to enjoy playing the beautiful game because, it can be stopped or taken away from me at any moment. A career in football is very short, so I’ll always enjoy it.”
That’s a very good reason to enjoy football. It’s also a good motto to live by. Is there anything that Joe would consider to be the best advice he’s ever received?
“Never get too high when things are going well, or too low when they’re not. Football has its ups and downs, it will never run smoothly.”
That’s certainly good advice. And finally, is there any advice that Joe would like to share for the next generation of footballer?
“Always do the non-negotiables, like turning up on time. Work hard and always put 100% into training and matches.”
That’s sound advice and wisdom from a player who has returned from serious injury to become one of the vital members of the Dartford defensive unit. Long may he remain here.
