Local College brings Robot to Bluewater event to inspire potential new students

by | Apr 3, 2016 | Dartford News

Next week The Leigh University Technical College will invite potential new students to an exhibition at Bluewater where it will showcase some of the courses and work of the current year groups.

Part of the Leigh Academies Trust, the UTC’s state of the art learning facility invites applicants aged 14-16 studying for GCSEs as well as 16-19 year olds studying A Levels who have a specialist interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

Visitors to the stand at Bluewater between 4th and 7th of April, will get to meet current students as well as staff who will be available to talk about the courses they are following and teaching.

As part of the exhibition, students will be demonstrating some of their computer and technology skills with the help of Meccanoid G15 KS, a 4ft tall, buildable, programmable Robot created from Meccano!

Robotics is one of the heavily studied topics at the college and the students are excited to have the opportunity to show off their programming and engineering skills which should prove entertaining for visitors to the stand too!

Speaking about the event, Steve Leahey, Principal at The Leigh UTC said: “This event is a fantastic chance for prospective students to gain a first insight into the courses we run at the UTC and we hope will inspire them to further their interest in studying with us in the future. Being able to demonstrate our studies with the help of Meccanoid will certainly help show youngsters how much fun studying STEM subjects can be and may inspire those who perhaps have not considered a future career in these subjects before.”

Steve continues: “There’s nothing better than hearing about what student life is like at the UTC than from our current students so we hope having Meccanoid along to help us will encourage as many kids and their parents to come along and see us at Bluewater.”

The Exhibition will be at Bluewater from 4th to the 7th April from 10.00am until 7.00pm each day.
