Roaring start to the year by the Lions

by | Jan 15, 2017 | Dartford Charities

Yesterday Dartford’s Lion President Barbara Whitehead presented a cheque to Mr Chris Iles for the Libra Charity which raises funds for King’s College London Haematology Department.

Fellow Lion Chris Iles accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity Libra. Chris explained to the club members how much of a difference every penny is making to patients who are in need of treatment.  Throughout 2016 the club raised money in various ways one of which was a cake sale in Dartford’s Saturday market last year.

Libra was established in 1976 and has so far raised and donated in excess of £250,000 to King’s College Haematology Department. The department itself is the branch of medicine concerned with diagnosing and treating diseases related to the blood.

Whilst the money has been used on different pieces of equipment throughout the years, the latest piece of technology purchased by King’s College with Libra’s donations is an Ambulatory Unit. This is a mobile unit for the treatment of Leukemia which can be used in different hospitals and locations throughout the country. It means patients can be treated without the need of being admitted to hospitals long term.

King’s College London have described Libra as the ‘most important seed corn.’ A great achievement for both Libra and the Lions Club.

Press Officer for the club Ragbhir Sandhu said “Over the years our club and the Lions clubs worldwide raise a substantial amount of money for charities helping millions of people. As a local club we are proud to support a large number of local charities, this is only achievable with the support of the local community and members”.
