Last weekend saw Dartford host Cheshunt at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park. Sam Odaudu featured in our matchday programme that afternoon. For those who missed it, here is the full article:
SECTION ONE
Sam Odaudu has become a vital part of Ady Pennock’s Dartford team. Whether he plays at left-back in a back four, or wing-back in a back five, the defender is comfortable within the Darts’ defensive unit. He can also play in the midfield when required to, such is his ability.
He’s also a loyal character and a leader on the pitch, especially to the younger players. Yet, it’s easy to forget that Sam’s still only 21 years of age. Since being promoted into the First Team, the Dartford Academy Graduate has notched up 75 appearances (69 starts) in all competitions (at the time of writing).
Sam has also scored on three occasions for the Darts, the first of which came in a 3-2 defeat at Concord Rangers on the 20th of April 2023. His other two goals were scored in front of the Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park crowd in August… one against Canvey Island, the other against Chatham Town… and what goals they were too!
Like his teammates, Sam is a delight to talk to, and is always in a positive frame of mind… “I’m doing very well thank you Chris, hope you’re keeping well too.” (I’m very good thanks Sam)
Following last season’s relegation from the National League South, nobody would have begrudged Sam moving on to pastures new. But he didn’t. He remained here in Kent, determined to help his team adjust to life in the Isthmian Premier League, and prepare to challenge for a return to Step 2 of the Non-League Pyramid…
“I re-signed because, this is the club that I know best. It’s the club that I always want to see doing well. There isn’t anyone else I’d rather play for in this league, and I want to help us to win promotion. That’s the aim Chris. I’ve been here when we had some success in the National League South, and that is the minimum level of where we should be.”
He continues, “For as long as I’m here, my intention is to enjoy playing and to have as much success (as a team) as possible. I want to stay healthy, injury-free, and give my absolute best in every game. I’m always grateful and thankful each time I step out onto the Dartford pitch, so I’m very appreciative of every opportunity that I get.”
We all know that the players have to work outside of the game at this level and, obviously, Sam is no different. Away from the pitch, he also likes to spend as much time as he can with his family and friends. Being mindful of all this, how does he keep on top of his fitness and general wellbeing?
“I know my body quite well now Chris, and working at a gym and wellness centre helps me to keep on top of that, as everything is there and available for me to use. I also go and see the Academy boys train, and sometimes join in. Together with the help from our fitness coach, Neil, keeping on top of things is quite easy.”
Rewinding to the beginning of his career, despite coming through the Dartford Academy, Sam was actually a late arrival in football compared to some of his peers.
“Yeah, I started playing football quite late compared to everyone else around me. I started around the age of 10-11, so didn’t really know much. I just played locally to where I live, before joining Dartford at the U15s level. I’ve been here ever since!”
Does he think being in an academy from an earlier age would have helped him more?
“Yeah, I’d say it definitely would have. Constantly being in a professional environment, especially with the coaching that they get. Saying that though, I didn’t have much knowledge on academies while growing up, so Sunday League was more than good enough for me.”
There’s still plenty of possibilities on the horizon for Sam, afterall he’s still only 21. Does he have aspirations of becoming a professional player?
“That’s always the dream Chris. As you say, I’m still only 21, and I’m doing my best. So, the hope is definitely there and I’ll keep on working to see what the outcome will be.
“However, I’m currently playing for one of the best teams in the league, and I’m able to do what I genuinely enjoy doing every weekend and play in front of supporters. So, I have no reason to complain, and will look to get better as I get older.”
With time running out, our conversation must end. As Sam has mentioned his delight at playing in front of supporters, does he have any words for the Dartford faithful?
“ I do, yes. Thank you to all of you. The boys and I are always appreciative of your support. Keep behind all of us week in, week out, as you always do, and we’ll continue to work hard in order to bring both you and the club success.”
