Help for Leros Tastes Success!
By Sarah Crook
Local charity ‘Help for Leros’ held a Vintage Tea and Cake event at Greenhithe Community Centre on Saturday 6th February. Organised by Laura Teisler – Goldsmith, the Charity’s founder, and Ellen Young, an amazing £1,721 was raised for this great locally based cause.
Set up in October 2015 after founder Laura read emails from a friend who was witnessing the humanitarian crisis first hand. Laura decided to do something to help and ‘Help for Leros’ was born. Since then they have managed to send over 140 boxes of humanitarian aid to Leros, Chios, mainland Greece and Syria.
Supported by the local community they send warm clothing, shoes, toiletries and sanitary items including nappies and children’s clothing. Laura herself is flying to Chios to volunteer on the 18th February and will hopefully be able to see the latest aid ‘Help for Leros’ have sent arrive.
There were some amazing cakes at the event in Greenhithe – all donated. The fairy cakes proved particularly popular, as well as the children’s play area, items for sale, face painting and glitter tattoos. My daughter and the rest of the kids seemed to particularly enjoy this. People were very generous and donated a lot of items to help. Local businesses donated prizes to be raffled, including Dartford Living, which was very successful. It was a great family friendly event that raised well above the expectations of this locally based charity.
