The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who dreams of creating Dublin’s greatest ever soul band. After advertising for members in a music paper, Jimmy auditions various wannabes before forming his new band: The Commitments. However, as any live musician will tell you, getting a band together is no easy task and keeping them together even harder – especially after a Guinness or two!
The show is based on the BAFTA award-winning film classic, adapted from Roddy Doyle’s iconic novel and directed by Andrew Linnie. It also stars Nigel Pivaro from Coronation Street.
The show took me back to the 80s in a good way and left me feeling very nostalgic. All the cast had fabulous voices and had me singing along from the very first scene.
I thought the set was realistic but I was impressed with how the design allowed for fast and efficient changes between scenes.
The character I didn’t expect to love was the skin head bouncer but the way he brought humour to the role won me over. My friend Mary was particularly amazed at the high energy performance given by the entire cast.
Drop your other commitments and book yourself tickets this week to board this Night Train through a River Deep, Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour when Mustang Sally and I Heard It Through The Grapevine!
