Sounds Right Phonics Dartford Starting School Summer Workshops

Is your little one due to start school in September? This is an emotional time for parents, and you may be experiencing concerns about whether your little one will be able to keep up. Recent studies by the National Literacy Trust have found some children are starting primary school up to nineteen months behind their peers. If you are wondering how you could give your child a head start for September, or some additional support, then Sounds Right Phonics Dartford is here to help.

Our four-week course will take your child through the most important sounds in the English language, a group of phonemes known as SATPIN. These sounds are the most frequently used when carrying out a process called segmenting and blending, where children learn to decode words by breaking the sounds down. This process is vital to learning to read with phonics. Our sessions will introduce each of the SATPIN sounds through music and games, and every session will include a section on segmenting and blending, with the help of the much-loved Sounds Right mascot, Robot Reg.

However, the classes are about more than just phonics. We also incorporate movement activities that develop fine and gross motor skills. The children love dancing with the pompoms, an activity that helps them strengthen the muscles in their arms and practice making letter shapes in the air. There is also the Dough Disco, always a firm favourite with children in class. The use of the playdough helps to strengthen the fingers individually, getting them ready for the physical challenges of handwriting. Each class will also include some suggestions for fun activities you can do at home with your little ones to build on the new skills they have learnt in class.

Sounds Right Phonics classes have been created by Alex Burnside, a former Reception teacher, and Charlie Day, a drama and speech and language teacher. Underpinning every session is an in-depth knowledge of what children need to learn before starting school, but the best part is that every class is also infused with a huge amount of fun and energy. The children will not even realise they are learning. Six weeks is a long time to keep little ones occupied, and the workshop classes provide a perfect way to entertain them for an hour each week.

The course begins on Monday 22nd July, at 10 am in the Meeting Place in the Orchards Shopping Centre. The early bird price of the course is £24 (normal price is £28). This offer is only valid until June 30th. Booking is essential as places are limited. To secure your place, go to:
