Dartford’s Health Walks go marching into the year ahead

by | Mar 12, 2022 | Dartford News, Dartford Council, Health, What's On?, Where to go locally

Health walks around Dartford have enjoyed a year of recovery following disruption during the first 12 months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lockdowns and social distancing measures meant walks in Dartford, Greenhithe and Swanscombe had to be postponed, causing members to drop out by the time they got back underway last spring.

Since then the Dartford Borough Council One You Kent walks have gone from strength to strength, recruiting new members and bringing back familiar faces.

In the autumn, One You Kent received funding from Kent Sport, which allowed Dartford Borough Council’s One You Kent team to organise special events and boost attendances in recent months.

These included:

  • A walk to St Margaret’s Church, Darenth. Attendees received a talk on the history of the church and a complimentary lunch before making the three mile journey back to Dartford Central Library;
  • A Pre-Christmas Walk and Talk through Central Park;
  • A Christmas meal for Walk Leaders;
  • A Historical Walk through Darenth Country Park with a talk from historian Francine Payne;
  • A Walk Leader Get Together.

Looking toward the year ahead, One You Kent would like to gain more Walk Leaders, so that additional Health Walks can be organised for local residents. It also hopes that new offers, such as Nordic Walking, can also be set up.

Leader of the Council Jeremy Kite said: “Dartford’s Health Walks are a great chance to bring people together and get fit.

“I attended one of the new regular walks set up last year on Dartford Heath. Everyone involved was really friendly and inviting, so potential new members should feel they are always welcome.

“Regardless of age or ability, these free walks are an opportunity to meet new people and take in the sights of our wonderful borough. I hope there will be more unique events for walkers to enjoy over the coming year and would encourage anyone thinking about coming along to do so.”

Dartford’s One You Kent team is always looking for more voluntary Health Walk Leaders. If you’re interested contact oneyou@dartford.gov.uk
