Last weekend’s game against Braintree Town saw Dartford FC Women’s Amy Green feature in our matchday programme. For those who missed it, here is the full article:
The name Amy Green may sound familiar to regular readers, as well as supporters of the Dartford FC Women’s squad. Not only is the 26-year-old an integral part of Connor Dymond’s midfield unit, she’s also the partner of vice-captain Charlie Torry, who featured in these pages recently.
I, for one, do like how the Dartford FC Women’s team contains little pockets of families and partnerships within its ranks. Such relationships brings an additional family feel to the squad, which also adds to the closeness and trust as they continue to challenge for league honours and trophies.
And it seems that Amy is enjoying life within the club as well, “I am enjoying it at Dartford very much. Playing football with this group of girls is unmatched. I hope we can really push on and become even more of a force to be reckoned with.”
Encouraging words from the midfielder, but what about on a more personal level? “…my plans are just to keep on developing with the team, and go on to win the league and get promoted. I just love playing and I want that to continue.”
Amy’s love for the beautiful game is contagious, where did it all begin for her? She continues, “My auntie showed me a newspaper clipping of her playing football many moons ago, which I believe just really inspired me. I remember then asking Dad to take me to the park straight away afterwards to play, and I’ve loved the sport ever since.”
Having established where it all started for Amy, she fondly talks about how it all began when she started playing for a boys team when she was young and at school. Around the age of fifteen she was scouted by Brighton, “…I stayed there until I was around 21, then moved on to Crystal Palace.”
After representing the Eagles, her affiliation with winged things continued as she turned out for Crawley Wasps, before signing for the Darts.
Returning to the beginning briefly, Amy sheds a little more light on those early years… “I was around 6 or 7 years old when I was just playing football in the park before joining the boys’ team while at primary school. However, when I signed for Brighton, I felt that it was a massive achievement and, by the time I was 15 I experienced a very brief first team appearance. I went on from there to have an amazing time at the club.”
Amy continues, “…Women’s football has gotten bigger and bigger throughout the years, and it’s made a lot of females realise that there could be a time when careers in football will be possible… which they are now… and, of course, we’ve had the Women’s Euros in the summer, and England won which I really enjoyed!”
Ah, of course, the summer’s celebration of the England team’s success. Besides watching the tournament, what else did Amy get up to during the off-season? “It was very relaxing thanks, minus getting the legs moving! Charlie (Torry) and I went to Vietnam for a few weeks, which was incredible. Then it was just relaxing as much as possible while enjoying the Euros.”
It’s clear that Amy likes to travel. During her down-time, she also likes to spend time “…seeing my lovely nephews, spending time with friends and family and, of course, my partner who I like to drag out on walks!” Outside of work she enjoys a Netflix documentary or two and also loves to visit places within the National Trust.
However, she does live and breathe football, not just taking part, but watching the sport too. Does she have a favourite moment? “My first goal for Dartford is a fond memory. But there’s been many great moments during my life. However, one that stands out for me is coming back and playing after a really difficult two years out on the sidelines with a knee injury… it was a time when I didn’t think playing again would be possible.”
And yet here she is, back to full fitness and representing Dartford FC Women while making the number sixteen shirt her own. So, as our conversation reaches its conclusion, I’ll let Amy have the last word…
