Ellenor invited to 10 Downing Street to mark the first Local Charities Day

Hospice charity ellenor was very proud to be invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday 14 December to celebrate the Government’s very first Local Charities Day (on Friday 16 December).

The reception was hosted by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, The Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, with the Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson MP. Claire Cardy, Chief Executive at ellenor and Rachel Holweger, Director of Income Generation, attended the event, along with Charlotte Hawkins from Good Morning Britain and Kelsey Hardwick, both ellenor Patrons.

The event began with a welcome from The Rt Hon Karen Bradley, who explained that Local Charities Day has been launched to draw attention to the huge difference that local charities make and the hard work of the people involved with them.

Rachel Holweger was then given the opportunity to speak and, after saying what a privilege it was to be invited to 10 Downing Street, said: “A huge thank you to the Government for highlighting the impact that local charities make across the UK. We are reliant on our local community in helping us to provide vital support to families facing terminal illness and we also couldn’t continue the work we do without the help of our hard-working volunteers.”

Led by the Office for Civil Society as part of the Department of Culture Media and Sport, Local Charities Day is intended to shine a spotlight on the work of local charities and community groups. The main focus is to provide local charities with a platform to promote the work they are doing and the many benefits they bring to people, communities and good causes.

“On Local Charities Day, we are shouting from the rooftops about small, local charities; their energy, commitment, expertise and the benefits they bring to their communities,” said MP Rob Wilson. “Every day thousands of people around the country are volunteering their time, expertise and goodwill to help improve the lives of others in our communities.”

ellenor is the only charity in Kent that provides hospice care for people of all ages – babies, children and adults – and their families. This includes pain and symptom relief, end of life care, respite, bereavement support and emotional and spiritual care.

“We witness each day the huge impact ellenor makes in our local community and it’s wonderful to have a day to celebrate the difference which local charities make,” says Rachel Holweger.
