• Easy top-tips show how everyone can take important water-saving measures at home
  • Green-fingered, DIY enthusiasts, families and young people can all make a big difference

Residents in Dartford and Darenth are being encouraged to save water at home and in the garden this summer as part of a national water saving campaign.

Water’s Worth Saving is a UK-wide campaign asking the public to consider their water use over the summer months and offering a range of handy, and simple, hints and tips.

Everyone can make a difference by following some simple hints and tips to save water, such as:

·      Don’t wash your car- Save yourself a chore and proudly let your car stay dirty

·      Let nature water your grass- Allow lawns go brown – it will soon go green again when it rains

·      Save paddling pool water- Top-up and reuse paddling pool water for your plants and grass

·      Put down the garden hose – Use watering cans for lawns, plants and flower beds, instead of garden hoses

·      Running taps are wasteful- Don’t let taps run when brushing your teeth – turn them off

·      Take shorter showers- Knocking a minute or two off to take shorter 4-minute showers

·      Fill your dishwasher before you use it – Don’t use your dishwasher until it is full and save water and energy.

An increase in staycations combined with larger numbers of people spending time at home during the summer holidays mean demand for water is expected to skyrocket as the mercury rises. The South- East is one of the driest areas of the UK and regularly gets less rain than the South Sudan or Perth, Western Australia.

The Water’s Worth Saving campaign, now in its second year, is a joint-initiative between water industry trade body Water UK, and water-saving experts Waterwise. They’ve teamed up with Thames Water to ask the communities in Dartford and Darenth to do their bit and save us much water as they can.

Peter Jenkins, Water UK Director of Campaigns, said:

“With the hot weather finally arriving this summer we are asking everyone to do their bit to save water to ensure there is enough to go around.

“Even small changes can make a big difference and residents in Dartford and Darenth can play their part by following some of our simple hints and tips.”

Nicci Russell, Managing Director, Waterwise, commented:

“We’re really pleased to be partnering with Water UK in helping to deliver important water saving tips to millions of people across the country. With water supplies becoming increasingly strained as the summer holidays approach, it’s vital that everyone does their bit to reduce the amount of water they use. The great news is that this year’s Water’s Worth Saving campaign will provide residents with plenty of easy ways to do just that.”

Andrew Tucker, Water Efficiency Manager, Thames Water, added:

“Kent is one of the most water-stressed counties in the country and despite a fairly wet start to the summer, it’s still very important to think about water usage as a surge in demand combined with drier weather can quickly create supply pressures. That’s why we’re delighted to be partnering with Water UK and Waterwise to help our customers save water, reduce their bills and ultimately protect our delicate water resources and environments in the long term.”
